Conservators study one of the large volumes

The rebinding of Audubon’s 'Birds of America'

The oversize volumes required a team of bookbinders

Making sections, sewing and endpapers

Groups of four leaves were joined together by folding the guards around each other.

The groups (known as sections) were pierced through the fold  then sewn together, over six linen tapes. The old endpapers were reinforced  and sewn on.
