Conservators study one of the large volumes

The rebinding of Audubon’s 'Birds of America'

The oversize volumes required a team of bookbinders

Adding paper guards

Paper ‘guards’ were then added - a guard being an additional strip of paper attached to the long 'spine side' edge of a leaf.  These provide increased flexibility to the individual plates when turned, and reduce the risk of future damage to the plates.  They also allow sections to be made, providing the basis of a new flexible sewing structure.
