Gerrit Dou was one of Rembrandt’s earliest pupils and became one of the most successful painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
His A Maidservant Scouring a Brass Pan at a Window is the smallest painting on display at Buckingham Palace, measuring about the size of a notebook. Before returning to the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace, the painting underwent careful conservation treatment. Layers of aged and discoloured varnish, which had dulled its appearance over time, were removed to reveal the work’s remarkable detail.
