    To mark the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth, don’t miss the chance to step inside her private apartments at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which are being opened to visitors for the first time. 

    In the company of an expert guide, you will discover the history of the rooms and learn how they were used by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, during her 70-year reign. 

    Queen Elizabeth II Private Apartment Tours will be available only in 2026.

    Visitors will see the Royal Breakfast Room, where the Queen and Prince Philip would dine privately while in residence, and the Sitting Room where the late Queen would work, reviewing the papers and documents presented in the Government red despatch boxes.

    In the Dressing Room visitors will see three ensembles from the Queen’s wardrobe, each worn during a significant occasion in Edinburgh.

    Your guided tour of the Private Apartments is combined with a standard visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. With our free multimedia guide you can explore almost 900 years of the Palace's history including the Throne Room and Mary, Queen of Scots’ historic chambers.

    Good to know

    • After your guided tour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Private Apartments, which lasts around 1 hour, your guide will escort you to the start of your self-guided visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which includes a multimedia guide.
    • There is limited availability, with a maximum number of 25 places on each tour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Private Apartments.
    • The guided tour is in English only.
    • Your ticket can be converted into a 1-Year Pass for unlimited standard admission to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. A £2 transaction fee will apply when pre-booking a return visit.
    • If you already have a ticket for the Palace and you wish to add on a Queen Elizabeth II's Private Apartment Tour, please book a new ticket online, and then contact the Ticket Sales and Information Office at [email protected] with your original order number to arrange a refund.

    Access information

    If you are a disabled visitor, we offer a free access companion ticket which can be booked online.

    Mobility scooters cannot be used on the Queen Elizabeth II Private Apartments Tour. Manual wheelchairs and rollators (wheeled walking aids with a seat) are available to borrow free of charge on a first come, first served basis for the duration of a visit. Please note that the accessible ramps used for the Queen Elizabeth II Private Apartments Tour have a maximum weight capacity of 250kg.

    British Sign Language tours

    The Queen Elizabeth II Private Apartments tour at 13:00 on Saturdays 25 July and 15 August will include a British Sign Language interpreter.
