Riesener made this corner cupboard (and the fall-front desk in the Wallace Collection) to furnish Marie-Antoinette’s private sitting room, the cabinet bas, at Marly. Like the matching fall-front desk, however, it has undergone alteration since Riesener made it. It is likely that its original trellis marquetry has been replaced with burr-wood veneers. Some of its gilt-bronze mounts have also been switched with later overcasts from a copy corner cupboard in an effort to make the pieces appear as a true pair.
