Jean-Henri Riesener

Furniture by one of the greatest cabinet-makers of the eighteenth century

JEAN-HENRI RIESENER (1734–1806)

Fall-front desk

1783

Oak, purplewood, satiné, tulipwood, stained woods, burr wood, ebony or ebonised wood, box, gilt bronze, Carrara marble | 139.6 x 80.5 x 42 cm | F302

Nestled amongst the grounds of Versailles, the Petit Trianon gave Marie-Antoinette the opportunity to escape royal ritual and etiquette. Riesener made this fall-front desk for the queen’s Boudoir there in 1783. Its intricate trellis marquetry enclosing sunflowers, and finely chased floral mounts, would have harmonised perfectly with its intended location, which overlooked the château’s gardens.
