Jean-Henri Riesener

Furniture by one of the greatest cabinet-makers of the eighteenth century

PROBABLY FRENCH, POSSIBLY RUSSIAN

Corner cupboard

1800–1865

Oak, conifer, amboyna, purplewood, stained woods, ebony or ebonised wood, box, gilt bronze, statuary marble | 89.3 x 80.7 x 54.8 cm | F276

Though at first it appears that this corner cupboard is the pair to Riesener’s, it is in fact a copy made during the nineteenth century using different techniques and materials. However, at some point an attempt was made to make the differences between the cupboards less visible by swapping some of the original gilt-bronze mounts on Riesener’s cupboard with the later overcasts from this one.
