Dunolly Castle

c.1860

Albumen print | 10.0 x 7.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2950692

This photograph of Dunolly Castle in Oban was included in a portfolio of 42 photographs that were taken and published by Wilson to illustrate Queen Victoria’s reminiscences of her visits to Scotland, Leaves from the Journal of Our Life in the Highlands. The book was published to great success in 1868. In the book, the queen writes about travelling to Oban via the Pass of Kerrera:

one of the finest spots we have seen, with the ruins of the old Castle of Dunolly and a range of high mountains in the distance

The photograph shows what appear to be two whale ribs marking the entrance to the foot of a path that leads up to the castle.
