Oban is known as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’. In his book Photographs of English and Scottish Scenery, Wilson credits Oban as the ‘great rendezvous of tourists in the West Highlands.’ As a port it attracted travellers wishing to explore the Inner Hebrides from the early nineteenth century. Beyond Oban lie the Isles of Iona and Staffa, both of which Wilson photographed.
