FIJI

Throwing club (iula tavatava)

nineteenth century

RCIN 74623

Fijian missile clubs of this type were sometimes used for hand-to-hand combat, but they were most effective when thrown, and were capable of delivering devastating blows. The small dots pricked on the surface of the shaft indicate the passage of time, which is carefully marked during Fijian ritual feasts and ceremonies of mourning.

Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by People of Fiji, December 1953
