TUVALU

Raffia fans

c.2007

RCIN 95897

Fine plaited fans known as ili were first made in Tuvalu using strands of coconut fibre. Today, raffia is often used instead. Colourful feathers are added for decorative purposes.

These examples pictured (RCINs 95896, 200279, 200280)  were possibly sent to Queen Elizabeth II by the Governor-General of Tuvalu, Thomasi Puapua, on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 2002, or presented on the Investiture of the Governor-General of Tuvalu in 2007, which was overseen by Charles, Prince of Wales. One fan has the word TUVALU woven into the top black stripe of the fan.
