Bowls for the preparation and drinking of yaqona (kava) form a central part of Fijian public ritual. The deepest bowls are used for serving kava at a traditional welcome ceremony, during which the honoured guest receives a cup of yaqona. The drink is made by pounding the yaqona root to a powder before combining with water and straining. The cord is used for hanging up the bowl when not in use.
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Government and People of Fiji in 1973. The bowl has not been used and was likely made specifically for presentation.
