Hummingbird batik

c.1985

RCIN 94408

This vibrant hanging celebrates the flora and fauna of St Kitts and Nevis, including hummingbirds sucking nectar from hibiscus flowers. The cloth was dyed using an ancient wax-resist technique (‘batik’), which creates contrasting coloured and uncoloured sections.

Presented to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh by the Government and People of St Kitts and Nevis during their official visit to St Kitts and Nevis, 23 October 1985.
