Paraguayan silversmiths are renowned for their delicate filigree work (filigrana). Thin wires of silver are twisted into complex openwork patterns and then soldered to form jewellery or other decorative items. The craft is particularly associated with the city of Luque.

This ornamental fan was presented to Queen Elizabeth II by President Juan Carlos Wasmosy Monti of Paraguay during his official visit to the United Kingdom, 5 July 1994.
