In August 1984, the then Prince of Wales (now King Charles III) received the title of Lapan (traditional leader) of Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. The title had been bestowed on his father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, 28 years previously. During the initiation ceremony, two young women placed dogteeth necklaces and a headband on the prince and presented him with a basket containing a lime-gourd. He then received an axe, a spear and a bunch of betel nuts as a sign of peace. This ceremonial club was presented as part of the ceremony.
