PAPUA NEW GUINEAN

Carved wooden figure of a warrior

1970-74

RCIN 94134

Queen Elizabeth II made her first visit to Papua New Guinea in 1974, when she was presented with this sculpture by Prime Minister Michael Thomas Somare.

The wooden figure represents a warrior. His shield is carved in the distinctive 'hour-glass' shape of those used by the Motu people of the southern coastal area of Papua New Guinea, often in combination with a throwing spear. The carving mimics the central section of finely woven cane.
