This summer, visitors to Windsor Castle can walk through a newly designed garden as part of their visit.
The Venus Garden, originally created by George IV in the 1820s, sits beneath the famous east side of Windsor Castle. Formerly known as the East Terrace Garden, it has been transformed according to His Majesty The King’s vision.
The redesigned garden is inspired by the path of Venus as it orbits the Sun. Traced over eight years, Venus’s orbit creates a five-petalled floral pattern, a shape used in sacred architecture by several cultures. This pattern has inspired the layout of new planting and hedge-lined paths.

Along the curved edge of the garden stands a line of sculptures from the Royal Collection. These include four bronze figures by Hubert Le Sueur, originally made for Charles I in the 1630s and brought to the garden for George IV.
Access to the garden is included with a standard ticket to Windsor Castle.
Practical information
- Whilst the Venus Garden is not accessible to wheelchair users, the area can still be enjoyed from the Terrace, which offers a clear view of the garden.
- Regrettably, the Venus Garden is not suitable for pushchairs. Pushchairs can be safely left in the secure cloakroom at the entrance to the State Apartments, or on the Terrace above the Garden.
- Please note that the garden may close at short notice. Opening is subject to the weather and the garden will be closed in adverse weather conditions.
