King George V's War Museum

A collection displayed at Windsor Castle by George V following the First World War

LADY FEODORA GLEICHEN (1861-1922)

Memorial plaques

c. 1919

RCIN 72699

These brass plaques belonged to the original memorial commissioned by King George V and Queen Mary, for the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle, to honour the memory of members of the Royal Household who worked at Windsor Castle and lost their lives during the First World War. The plaques are the only surviving parts of the memorial, which was destroyed during the fire at Windsor Castle in 1992. They were found after the fire in the grounds of the Castle by gardeners.

Both J Groves and GH Haigh had been gardeners at Windsor. John Isaac Groves enlisted in December 1916 into the Royal Berkshire Regiment, he died on the 13th July 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial in France. George Haigh enlisted in November 1916 into the Royal Marines; he died during the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917.
