King George V's War Museum

A collection displayed at Windsor Castle by George V following the First World War

SOANE & SMITH : 462 OXFORD STREET, LONDON

Set of five Toby jugs

1915-18

RCIN 69434

These five Toby jugs depict King George V, Lord Kitchener, Field Marshal Haig, Admiral Beatty and Marshal Foch. They belong to a set of 11 jugs of the Allied commanders of the First World War that were made by Wilkinson using designs by Sir Frances Carruthers Gould (1844-1925). Gould was a caricaturist hired by the Pall Mall Gazette in 1887. He was the first staff political cartoonist working for a daily newspaper. These jugs would have provided a colourful and lighthearted moment in the King's War Museum.
