CALEB ROBERT STANLEY (1795-1868)

Brocket Hall

dated 1841

Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour | 21.7 x 32.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 920153

Victoria and Albert visited the Prime Minister Lord Melbourne’s seat, Brocket Hall in Hatfield, during a tour of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire early in their marriage. The focal point of this watercolour is, perhaps surprisingly, not the grand house, which Stanley places at the far left of the composition, but its idyllic setting.
