This painting shows Nasir al-Din Haider, King of Awadh (r. 1827–37), outside his palace in Lucknow as he proceeds in state to meet the East India Company Resident, Colonel John Low. The kings of Awadh (Oude) ruled in alliance with the East India Company. They presented some of the finest South Asian paintings and manuscripts in the Royal Collection to George III, George IV and William IV.
