DAVID TENIERS THE YOUNGER (ANTWERP 1610-BRUSSELS 1690)

The Interior of a Kitchen with an Old Woman Peeling Turnips

c. 1640-44

RCIN 405945

Teniers excelled at depicting interiors, combining meticulously captured still-life elements with human interaction. A woman is engrossed in her everyday task while an array of food is set out on the left. Our eye is led to the make-shift tavern in the background. A head poking through the hatch on the right surveys the scene – just as we do.
