DAVID TENIERS THE YOUNGER (ANTWERP 1610-BRUSSELS 1690)

Fishermen on the Sea-shore

c.1637-9

RCIN 405348

These fishermen sorting through the day’s catch differ from the usual bustling scenes that we associate with Teniers. The silver-grey colouring is skilfully blended from the ground through to the sea and sky beyond. A solitary tower breaks the horizon-line, thereby uniting the three horizontal planes of the image.
