SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK (1599-1641)

Christ Healing the Paralysed Man

c. 1619

RCIN 405325

Van Dyck created this painting aged 20 whilst working in Rubens’s studio. Taken from St Matthew’s Gospel, it shows Christ forgiving the sins and healing the bodily ailments of a paralysed man. In contrast to the witnesses in the shadows on the left, Christ and the apostle indicate the path out into the light – symbolising redemption.
