The château de Marly was a palace north of Versailles where members of the royal family could retreat from the pressures of court life. Marie-Antoinette set about refurnishing her apartment there in 1780, and in 1782 Riesener delivered this chest of drawers to her cabinet bas. Originally, it was veneered with a trellis pattern containing sunflowers and fitted with a marquetry pastoral trophy, but it was reveneered in the early nineteenth century, probably to appeal to the taste for mahogany which was popular at that time.
