Jean-Henri Riesener

Furniture by one of the greatest cabinet-makers of the eighteenth century

ATTRIBUTED TO JEAN-HENRI RIESENER (1734–1806)

Writing and toilet table

c. 1780-84

Oak, mahogany, gilt bronze, mirror glass | 78.8 x 47 x 35.5 cm | F322

A small multifunctional piece of furniture such as this writing and toilet table would have been used in the more intimate apartments of a Parisian hôtel. Although it shows all the signs of Riesener’s design and craftsmanship, it was altered in the nineteenth century by converting two drawer compartments into a fall-front, which allowed it to accommodate a chamber pot.
