ANNIE LEIBOVITZ (B. 1949)

HM Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Admiral's Cloak

28 Mar 2007

RCIN 2935746

In 2007 Leibovitz was commissioned to photograph Queen Elizabeth II (b. 1926) in anticipation of The Queen's State Visit to the USA. It was the first time an American created an official portrait of The Queen. In this work Leibovitz recalls Cecil Beaton's (1904–80) famous portraits of Queen Elizabeth wearing the Admiral Boat Cloak. The photograph was taken inside Buckingham Palace. The image of The Queen was then digitally super imposed onto an image of Buckingham Palace gardens.
