St Martin's Cross, Iona

1860

Stereoscopic albumen print | 7.5 x 6.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2514408

Dating back to the 9th century, St Martin’s Cross stands alongside Iona Abbey. The cross is carved from epidiorite and stands in a granite base. On the west-facing side of the cross a series of carvings show various scenes including a harpist and piper. Due to the high demand for his work, Wilson returned to Iona to photograph Iona Cathedral on numerous occasions and other versions include a man seated in the same position wearing a Tam O’Shanter hat.
