A hand-carved and painted talking stick. It was made by Simon Charlie, a distinguished master carver and elder of the Cowichan Coast Salish First Nation.

A talking stick is used in councils and meetings to ensure order and indicate authority. Only the person holding the stick may speak, providing a fair hearing for all.
