ARTHUR CHRISTOPHER ADAMS (1867-1960)
A water carrier, Jerusalem
c.1923RCIN 926776
A miniature watercolour of a young woman striding forwards with a pitcher of water balanced on her head.
This portrait of a young water carrier in Jerusalem was probably drawn after a photograph. Christopher Adams contributed six miniature works to the Dolls’ House, all of Middle Eastern subjects. His brother Marcus was commissioned by George VI to photograph his young daughters. Several of these photographs, with hand-colouring added by Christopher, are in the Royal Collection. For an example see RCIN 2943052, a portrait of the young Princess Elizabeth.
