UC5 was the first submarine minelayer to penetrate the English Channel during the war.  It was captured near Harwich, Essex on 27 April 1916 and was later exhibited on the Thames at Temple Pier to raise money for war loans and charity. This is a hinged grating taken from the top of one of the mine trunks of the submarine.
