International Red Cross flag

twentieth century

RCIN 74635

This International Red Cross flag came from the hospital ship HMHS Anglia. On 31 October 1915 the Anglia had been used to evacuate King George V from France following his riding accident. Less than a month after transporting the King, the Anglia was sunk, carrying 13 officers and 372 other ranks. It hit a mine that had been laid by the German U-boat UC5. Many ships launched rescue boats; however, despite their best efforts, five army officers, 128 soldiers, one nurse and nine members of the Royal Army Medical Corps lost their lives.
