Two-handled cup and cover in Mughal style

late eighteenth to early nineteenth century

RCIN 19582

In the eighteenth century jade objects made in Mughal workshops in India were imported into China where they had an impact on Chinese design. The Qianlong Emperor was an ardent patron of Mughal-style jades. During his reign he collected a number of these wares and composed 57 poems inspired by them. He also established jade workshops for the production of Mughal-style jades in the palace grounds.

This shallow cup is thinly carved in Mughal style. It was acquired by Queen Mary in 1930.
