Wicker basket

1876

Wicker, felt, glass | 50.8 x 35.2 x 35.2 cm (whole object) | RCIN 42917

This intricate birch basket was presented to Queen Victoria in 1876 by 13 Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) visitors to Windsor Castle. On 27 June, they played an exhibition match of lacrosse at the castle, watched by members of the Royal Family. Their opponents were a team from Montreal, with whom they had been touring England, Scotland and Wales. Lacrosse is Canada’s oldest team sport, derived from Indigenous competitions used to train warriors and resolve conflict. Following the match, the Iroquois presented the queen with an address, describing her as ‘our good mother’. In turn, each player received a signed photograph of the monarch.
