23 - 23 Jun 1959

Gelatin silver print | 20.6 x 25.4 cm (image) | RCIN 2003631

The Queen is Colonel-in-Chief of numerous Canadian regiments, including Le Royal 22e Régiment. This photograph shows Her Majesty presenting the regiment’s colours during her tour of Canada in 1959. The colours incorporate a beaver, representing service to Canada, and a crown, representing service to the Sovereign. The modern origins of the regiment date to the First World War, when a French Canadian Expeditionary Force was formed in 1914. This was the only French-speaking infantry unit in the Canadian Army at that date. In 1921, King George V granted the regiment permission to use the title ‘Royal’ in its name.
