KING GEORGE V, KING OF THE UNITED KINGDOM (1865-1936)

Message from King George V to his Eskimo subjects in the Eastern Canadian Arctic [historic title]

1934

26.0 x 1.5 cm (book measurement (inventory)) | RCIN 1047353

This illuminated manuscript on vellum contains addresses by King George V and Queen Mary to Inuit in Nunavut and Nunavik, with replies written in Inuktitut syllabics and English translations. The final leaves contain a pencil manuscript of 'God Save The King' written in Inuktitut syllabics, and an illuminated map of the eastern Canadian Arctic. The impetus for the addresses came from the Hudson's Bay Company, who wished to commemorate the King's Silver Jubilee in 1935.
