This account of French settlement in Canada, from George III’s private library at Windsor, gives a detailed history of the relations between the French colonies and Indigenous Canadians, most notably the Iroquois, Huron (Wyandot) and Abenaki. The books describe the initial conflicts between French and Indigenous people and the eventual treaty agreed at Montreal in 1701. This treaty, known as the ‘Great Peace’, formalised relations between France and Indigenous people and is unique in colonial North American history for treating Indigenous people as equal to Europeans.
