General Wolfe's Field Coat

c.1727-59

Green serge (wool) with lining of red serge | 140.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 31955

This unassuming field cloak was reputedly the one on which General Wolfe was laid on at his death at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. Following Wolfe’s death, which was immortalised by Benjamin West, the cloak was taken by his friend Isaac Barré (1726–1802). By 1816 it had been presented to the Prince Regent, the future George IV, who followed military activities in Canada with great interest, and is listed in the inventory of his London residence, Carlton House.
