During the royal tour of 1901, 2,000 First Nations representatives assembled in Calgary to present loyal addresses and petitions. It was an historic gathering. Chief Joseph Samson of the Cree declared, ‘This is the first time that I have beheld such a crowd of people mingling together in peace, and I am thankful. I am grateful that we live under one great flag, in one great Empire, and with one law controlling us all.’ After sending his respects ‘to the Great King [Edward VII], your illustrious father’, he reiterated Indigenous concerns about food shortages caused by agricultural settlement and over-hunting.
