AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Lesser George known as ‘The Strafford George’

last quarter 17th century

RCIN 441379

The Lesser George was a more practical form of the Garter insignia than the Garter Collar and Great George. They were often referred to as Hunting Georges, particularly suitable to be worn with armour and while hunting, usually tucked under one arm. This example is set with rose-cut diamonds like that worn by William III in his portrait by Wissing nearby.
