A Self-Portrait

c.1535-40

RCIN 405780

Katlijne van Mispelteeren, The Artist's Wife©

This panel and the one shown to the right are pendant portraits depicting the artist and his wife. Joos van Cleve presents himself as a distinguished gentleman in rich, sombre clothes, gesturing towards his wife as though in mid-sentence. He may have painted these works to mark his second marriage in the early 1530s.
