This Mary, Queen of Scots fancy-dress costume was worn for a ball in the 1870s to raise money for the Scott Memorial in Edinburgh, Scotland. Guests attended in outfits inspired by the works of the poet Sir Walter Scott. Queen Alexandra dressed as Mary, Queen of Scots and her husband, the future Edward VII, dressed as the Lord of the Isles from one of Scott’s poems.
