A carved wooden figure of a warrior from Papua New Guinea, holding a spear in his right arm and a carved shield in his left hand, wearing a shell necklace and a headdress.
The shield is in the distinctive 'hour-glass' shape of those used by the Motu people of the southern coastal area, often in combination with a throwing spear. Its central section of finely woven cane is replicated in the carving.Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by Prime Minister Michael Thomas Somare of Papua New Guinea during her official visit to Papua New Guinea, 22–27 February 1974.
In 1974 The Queen made her first visit to Papua New Guinea which The Duke of Edinburgh had visited independently during his tour of 1956-7. -
