Queen Mary's Dolls' House Passage, Windsor Castle
-
Miniature pair of corner armchairs ('Napoleon Chairs') of brown leather with outscrolled back and low side arm, on tapering square-section, stained wooden legs.
Chairs of this design were one of Lutyens' personal favourites. The chair was said to be inspired by a portrait of Napoleon by Jacques-Louis David, in which the Emperor is seated in an assymetric chair. Lutyens first created the Napoleon chair in 1919, and examples were supplied for his own use and for each of his children. In a sketch containing suggestions for furniture for the Dolls' House, now in the RIBA, Lutyens included a Napoleon chair with a figure seated in it and a note below claiming the chair was extremely comfortable and was 'highly recommended'.Provenance
