Prince Albert (1819-1861) 1846
Marble | 191.1 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2070
-
Full length marble statue of Prince Albert wearing a classical suit of armour chased with emblems of the British Isles and Coburg, with a cloak over his left shoulder. His left hand rests on the hilt of his sheathed sword; his right holds a circular shield chased with dolphins and St.George and the dragon.
This statue represents the young Prince Albert's own vision of his role as royal consort, 'fighting the good fight’ in defence of both the Queen (represented by the figure of Victoria on his breastplate) and the country (the national symbols of the British kingdoms and of Saxony elsewhere on his armour).
