Decorative Arts

We are specialists in the conservation of furniture, ceramics, metalwork, armour and decorative surfaces. What makes our work so special is that the items we treat are often from the royal residence for which they were originally acquired many centuries ago – and sometimes from the exact spot.

We ensure that the objects in the Royal Collection under our care are maintained and presented to the highest-possible standards. We work closely with curators, photographers and the Exhibitions team on the preparation of items for display, loan and publication, particularly catalogues of the collections.

One of our most significant recent projects was the restoration of the extraordinary Sunflower Clock, acquired by George IV in 1819, which required skilful conservation of porcelain and gilt-bronze. Preparation for the work included a visit to Dresden to view the only comparable piece.

Our staff usually have a qualification in the relevant field of conservation from one of the leading specialist training colleges and, of course, have exceptional manual skills and good practical experience.
