Canaletto varied his drawing materials very little throughout his career. Here he made two drawings of the same subject, one in pen and ink alone, and the other with shading added in grey wash. The sixteenth-century Libreria (the library of San Marco) can be seen with the two columns at the entrance of the Piazzetta.
