The Antarctic Circle

In 1956–7 the Duke of Edinburgh undertook a world tour, during which he became the first member of the Royal Family to cross the Antarctic Circle and was thus entitled to join ‘the Order of the Red Nose’. To commemorate this event the Duke of Edinburgh and the artist Edward Seago, who accompanied the Duke for part of the world tour, designed the above lino-cut certificate. In a photograph taken on board HMY Britannia, Prince Philip can be seen inking the lino-cut.
