- History, Religious and moral education, Social Studies
- Historical Interpretation, Mary Queen of Scots, Reformation, Significant historical events, Significant individuals in the past
Pupils will stand in the spots where history was made, following in the footsteps of key historical figures like Mary, Queen of Scots and John Knox. They will hear stories about the huge social, religious and political changes in Scotland during the Reformation - and think about how historic Scotland was connected to other parts of the world.
Sessions will begin at the Abbey Strand Centre, where pupils will receive an introduction to the time period, get a chance to handle replica objects, and think about how new ideas travelled from place to place in the sixteenth century.
Afterwards, pupils will be led on a tour of the Palace, exploring the stories related to Scotland’s tumultuous Reformation and how the legacy of these political divides reverberated into later centuries. They will in particular focus on Royal residents: James IV, James V, and Mary, Queen of Scots.
Pupils will also get the chance to reflect on how to assess reliability and usefulness of sources produced during an era of conflict and turmoil.
Visit includes access to: Holyrood Abbey, Mary, Queen of Scot’s Bedchamber, Mary, Queen of Scot’s Outer Chamber, The Great Gallery, Darnley’s Ante Chamber, The Lobby, The Great Stair, The Throne Room and Abbey Strand Learning Centre.
Facilitated session lasts: 2 hours
