How Holyrood got its name

Holyrood stag

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the Official Residence of His Majesty The King in Scotland, and it has been a royal home for more than 500 years. Long before the Palace was built, an abbey was established on the same site at the foot of Arthur’s Seat – today the abbey is a ruin, which you can explore as part of your visit to the Palace.

How did the abbey, and later the Palace, get the name of Holyrood? This short animation tells the tale.
